Significant progress has been made in the proposals for eco-towns, according to a report published today by the Eco-Town Challenge Panel, an independent group of experts in sustainability and urban development set up by Housing Minister Caroline Flint.

Tesco Ireland today announced that the company will be opening its first environmental store ("eco store") in Tramore this October. When completed the 30,000 sq ft retail outlet will use 45% less energy than a supermarket of a similar size. Setting a new benchmark for green technology and construction in retail in Ireland, Tesco Tramore will save 420 tonnes of CO2, a 30% annual saving.

According to a new report from Research and Markets (a Dublin based market research company), solar is one of the fastest growing energy technologies in the global economy and in the cleantech universe, and China will emerge as one of the greatest solar energy production bases in the world.

One of the problems with solar power is the cost. A recent study by Barratt Homes estimated that domestic solar panels in the UK could take up to 37 years to pay back the cost of installation.
