According to a report published in Conservation Letters, kangaroos can be utilised to help reduce Australia's methane emissions. It proposes that eating more kangaroos in lieu of cattle and sheep will help slow climate change.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's annual Greenhouse Gas Index, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have risen by 19 billion tons (0.6%); methane levels have risen by 27 million tons after nearly a decade with little or no increase.
