Carbon Footprints, Local Steps

A new report published by the "New Local Government Network" argues that the Government goal of 60 percent carbon dioxide reduction can be achieved 25 years earlier than currently forecast. It claims that local councils could introduce measures that would save 320 million tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2025.

The Local Government Association today published specific proposals on how 'save as you throw' schemes could work in practice in some parts of the country - and made a firm commitment that local authorities would not use it as a stealth tax to raise extra cash and that any scheme should be supported by local people.
