Worried that the world's concern about pollution in China is not good for its reputation, China is attempting some bold steps to get people out of their cars.

This week China has launched the first nationwide urban public transport week in an attempt to raise residents' awareness on energy saving and environmental protection.

The campaign, with the theme of "Green Transport and Health", covers 108 cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin and will last through September 22, according to the Ministry of Construction.

It will encourage people to walk, ride bicycles and take public transport rather than drive private cars, the ministry said.  On the 22nd, the 108 cities will be having a "No Car Day" when various zones within the city centres will only be open to pedestrians, cyclists, buses and taxis.<
