Oldham Council is the first authority in Greater Manchester to take up the Government's Cycle to Work Scheme.

The scheme is run in partnership with Cyclescheme Limited and allows Council staff to obtain any make or model of bike and safety equipment under a 12-month hire agreement.

This agreement allow staff to save around 45% on costs of the bike as they do not have to pay VAT, national insurance or income tax on that amount. At the end of the hire period, the employee is able to transfer ownership of the bike for around 5% of the cost.

The scheme does not cost the Council any money because Cyclescheme carry out all of the administration. Savings are actually made by the Council as the employer's national insurance contributions are reduced.

Several local bike shops including, The Cyclery, Surosa, Skidmores and Rowbothams, have also benefited by signing up as partner shops and receiving business through the scheme.

Over 50 employees of the Council have so far signed up to the scheme, which is on offer until 31 August.

Cabinet Member of Environment and Regeneration, Councillor David Hibbert said:
"Cycling is one of the most environmentally friendly and healthy modes of travel. And we are determined to make it even more attractive as part of our effort to promote sustainable transport through the Council's Travel Plan.

"The scheme is an excellent opportunity and incentive for staff to cycle, rather than drive to work. And I hope as many people as possible take advantage of it. I also hope other employers consider following our example."
