The school will be launching the 'Two feet on Tuesdays' and 'Walk on Wednesday' walking buses on Tuesday 19 June 2007 from the Glenthorne Road area.
The new walking buses mean more children will now be able to walk to school, which will help to cut down further on congestion and pollution around the school entrance.
The school has introduced this scheme and the earlier walking bus with the help of Cornwall County Council's Travel Awareness Team who have provided training for the volunteers, and appropriate literature and guidelines to the parents and children who join the scheme. The Travel Awareness Team ensure that chosen routes are suitable and as safe as possible, consulting with Traffic Safety Engineers and Road Safety Officers to ensure all aspects of safety are considered.
Matt McTaggart, Cornwall County Council's Executive Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, who is very supportive of walking and cycling schemes, said:
?It's great to see Threemilestone School introducing a second Walking Bus so soon after their first. We know walking buses can make a big difference to congestion and pollution.
?The School is actively promoting their Travel Plan and have been collecting mode of travel data each Tuesday to establish the number of cars visiting the School and have closed the car park to encourage people to park a little distance from the school and walk the rest of the way.
?The parent volunteers and school are to be congratulated for their continued and increasing enthusiastic support of the Scheme.?
The inaugural Walking Bus will be joined by Rachael Thomas the Travel Awareness Senior School Travel Plan Officer and Billy the Boots the Cornwall County Council Travel Awareness Mascot will welcome the Walking Bus as they arrive at School.
Rachael Thomas has been working with the school on their Travel Plan said:
?Our surveys have shown where the majority of the pupils who attend the school live and our joint aim, with the school, is to encourage as many children to walk from the Glenthorne Road area as possible, reducing the number of vehicles coming to the school as possible.? Rachael continued, ?The School launched their first walking bus to coincide with their 'Two Feet on Tuesdays' from the Gloweth area earlier this year, which has proved to be very successful.?
A Walking Bus is a parent-school supported project where trained volunteers will escort children to and from school along a set route, with the aim of encouraging parents to become volunteers, making it possible for parents who are unable to walk to school to allow their children to join the Walking Bus.
The Walking Bus parent volunteers and children will wear high visibility tabards for safety, on loan from Cornwall County Council, and will start at the green on Glenthorne Road, collecting children along the route to the school entrance on Polstain Road.
Teacher Lexi Lobb, School Travel Plan Champion of Threemilestone School, said:
?I am delighted that the whole school has made a great effort in making our 'Two feet on Tuesdays' such a success, which has encouraged us to introduce a further walking bus from another part of the village on Tuesday and Wednesday.
?I will continue to support everyone in their endeavours to reduce the congestion and improve safety at the school entrance and hope as many of our pupils will join the initiative as possible.?
