New computer servers have been installed at the Monkton Park offices in Chippenham that are around 20% more efficient than the old equipment, saving up to £6,600 each year. The initiative is part of the council's drive for energy efficiency as part of its contribution to a reduction in global warming.
Like many organisations, North Wiltshire District Council has seen a steady increase in Information Technology leading to an increase in energy use. After investigation and research with manufacturers, the council's I.T. team have installed new virtualisation technology that enables many servers to share the same hardware, using less electricity, making the offices greener and reducing running costs. The new energy efficient equipment will also mean reduced air conditioning costs and the overall savings made will pay for the equipment within three years. This major change in direction will enable additional future reductions in energy consumption and cost in coming years.
Pete Barnett, North Wiltshire District Council's ICT Team Leader, said:
"This project reflects the council's Procurement Sustainability policy whereby equipment use is regularly reviewed to improve energy efficiency. We are constantly reminding manufacturers to 'think green' both in the design and energy efficiency of their products and also to consider greener ways of manufacturing. The overall benefits include cost savings, less effect on climate change and greater I.T. reliability to all our users."
Cllr Toby Sturgis, the Lead Member for Climate Change at North Wiltshire District Council, said:
"I urge all users of I.T. equipment to review their use of technology in terms of energy consumption as a means of reducing their energy use and costs. Everyone can make a difference by simply changing one thing and even simple steps such as turning off equipment on stand-by, where possible, can reap dividends."
