A pocket sized 'green commuter guide' has been published with the aim of encouraging more people in the Chichester and Bognor Regis areas to leave the car at home when they head for work.

Around 10,000 copies are being distributed to major employers in and around the two towns, including the NHS and Chichester University.

The guide, which includes pullout maps, promotes:

? A recently completed off-road cycle path running between Bognor Regis and Chichester.

? Other cycle routes such as the Centurion Way, which links Chichester and West Dean.

? Bus services with details of route numbers to various locations and journey times.

? Safety tips for people who walk to work.

? Websites for car sharing, and public transport information including National Rail Enquiries.

The guide is a partnership between West Sussex County Council and publishing giant John Wiley and Sons Ltd, which has bases in both Chichester and Bognor Regis.

The County Council's share of the cost has been met entirely from income raised after charges were introduced for staff parking at County Hall as part of the TravelWise campaign to encourage greater cycling, walking and public transport.

The only free parking bays at the County Council's headquarters are reserved for people who car share with two or more colleagues.

Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton, County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said he was grateful for the backing from John Wiley.

He said: ?I hope that major employers through Chichester and Bognor Regis will help ensure their staff get a copy of what is a very comprehensive guide to more sustainable travel choices. The more cars we can take off the road, the better that will be for congestion and our environment.

?I know it is not possible for many people to walk or cycle to work every day, but even once or twice a week can make a real difference.?
