According to a new report published by the Energy Savings Trust today, all the good work to save power consumption on our washing machines and fridges is being completely undone by our addiction to gadgets.

The Energy Savings Trust leave us with some top tips to help us manage how much electricity we use on our gadgets:

* Don't leave them on standby. When you're not using them turn them off, properly.

* Put them on a timer. When you're not using them at night they will switch themselves off.

* Integrate. If you are buying a new TV, buy one with an integrated digital tuner - it will use less electricity.

* Use a laptop. Laptops were found to consume less electricity than desktops.

* Be a Savvy Buyer. Look for the EST's Energy Saving Recommended or Energy Star stickers on products.
