Somerset-based actress Kate O'Mara joined the county's "Pledge to Recycle" Campaign this week, helping to increase the amount of household waste recycled.

The campaign, launched in June by England cricket star Marcus Trescothick, is being run by the Somerset Waste Partnership (consisting of Somerset County Council and the five District/Borough Councils in the County), and funded by WRAP as part of Somerset's "Recycle for Somerset" Behavioural Change Campaign.

Giving her support to the pledge, Kate O'Mara said:
"I always recycle everything I can. I believe it is a vitally important thing for everyone in Somerset to recycle."

As well as encouraging people to recycle, the scheme is designed to provide householders with information and news. 'Pledgers' will receive regular 're-recycle' newsletters, providing hints and tips on reducing and recycling household waste. There are also recycling competitions, with a range of recycled and energy efficient gifts to be won.

Cllr Nigel Woollcombe-Adams, Chair of the Somerset Waste Partnership, was delighted that another Somerset star has signed up to the Pledge Campaign: "It is wonderful news to get such high profile support for recycling. It is important that we all get behind the campaign and recycle as much as possible; we are all making a real difference and it means that we are now sending a lot less waste to landfill thanks to everyone's support".

As well as pledging to recycle, people can also pledge to take other actions that will help to reduce the amount of waste that they create.
