This summer, local artists who work with recycled materials are being invited by Guildford Borough Council to put forward ideas for projects that raise awareness of recycling and its impact on climate change.
Cllr Jenny Wicks, Lead Councillor for the Environment, explained:
"Guildford is taking a lead role in this major Surrey-wide initiative promoting innovative art design using recycled materials. We are hoping to spark the interest of artists and creators - both professional and amateur alike - across the whole county."
The initiative is the brainchild of Guildford Borough Council which is working with Woking Borough Council and lead artist Caroline Jackman.
The successful artists will work with the local community, including schools and day centres, to run workshops and create new designs in response to recycling. This is part of Recycled By Design, an exhibition featuring recycled art and design to be held in Guildford House Gallery in September 2008.
Cllr Wicks added:
"The exhibition will feature a living room furnished with designer goods made from recycled materials and the best industrial design, fine art and community art. It raises awareness of the importance of recycling, valuing our towns and countryside through clearing up our waste.
"It's vital that we close the loop and buy recycled goods and this exhibition shows how exciting this can be."
The project should also inspire schoolchildren and students to experiment with environmentally friendly art and their best work will feature in the exhibition.
Artists who would like to be considered should visit the 20 first century recycle by design website or contact Jane Alexander on 01483 449999 for further details. Proposals should be submitted by 28 September 2007.
