Teaming up with environmental company, Green Cone, Test Valley Borough Council will offer volunteers the choice of two Food Waste Digesters on a 12 month trail (after which they can keep the product). This will allow the Council’s Environment and Health Service to assess how effective the digesters could be in reducing the amount of food waste sent to incinerator sites.
Councillor Peter Boulton, Environment Portfolio holder, said:
“The Council’s involvement in this scheme highlights our continuous commitment to reducing waste and encouraging recycling. The food digester, alongside recycling, could be an excellent way to encourage families to keep disposing of their waste in an environmentally friendly way. We will keep in touch with the volunteers and get their feedback on their effectiveness. Support and advice will be provided throughout the trial.”
The trials are due to start in late September. Volunteers will be invited to attend a training session and, as well as receiving their digester they will get in information packs, recording sheets and, if needed, help to install the digester in their garden.
Managing Director of Green Cone, John Cockram, said:
“Households in the UK dispose of more than 7 million tonnes of organic garden waste and 6 million tonnes of food waste every year. These figures must be reduced if the country is to achieve a cleaner and healthier environment. One of the best ways is to take food waste out of the household rubbish and recycle it at home.”
Due to limited availability recruitment of volunteers is on a first come, first served basis.
