Cycling to work, recycling their rubbish and reducing their energy consumption made sure the Beverley family from Brackley were the winners of the title of South Northamptonshire's Greenest Family.

Council Chairman, Councillor Graham Smith, presented the family with their prizes at their home, and got a taste of how the family are doing their bit to help the environment.

Everyday Sue Beverley cycles the 9 mile round trip to work and her children Elliott and Erica walk to school. The family recycles all the paper, card, glass, tin cans, foil and plastics that they can and Sue uses the bits they can't recycle in crafts projects with the kids at the school where she teaches. They've reduced their energy consumption in all sorts of ways, from using low energy lightbulbs at home (which they've done since 1998) to using a solar powered charger for their rechargeable batteries.

The first prize was a box of goodies to help keep them green including and iPod for when they're walking to school and a compost bin. Second prize was awarded to the Bryan Family in Chacombe, and joint third prizes went to Mr Ogden from Brackley and the Houghtons in Hackleton.

Councillor Graham Smith, Chairman to South Northamptonshire Council, who helped with judging the entries, said:

“It's encouraging to see all the families who entered really trying to do their bit for the environment. It was a tough decision but the Beverleys won because as well as doing simple things like using energy efficient light bulbs, they also went the extra mile (or not in this case!) by holidaying in Cornwall so they're not contributing to global warming by flying anywhere.

“I'd like to thank all the families who entered and congratulations all of them for making the effort to be that little bit greener.”
