A new communal recycling point has been provided at each of the seven blocks of flats for a wide range of materials, including paper, cardboard, glass, plastic bottles, cans, foil, textiles and hand tools.
The Belfast City Council recycling service is delivered by Bryson Recycling, who currently provide more than 50,000 households in the city with a weekly kerbside box service.
Councillor Cathal Mullaghan, chairman of the Health and Environmental Services Committee, said:
?This initiative demonstrates the Councils desire to improve services and increase recycling rates across the city.?
Claire McCallum, of Bryson Recycling, added:
?We introduced a trial recycling service in the New Lodge flats in 2005, and we are now trying to encourage even more residents to recycle with this new and improved service.
?The new recycling stands have been specially designed for use in flats and will provide residents with a convenient way to recycle from home. Our canvassing team are also going to call at all flats to explain the service in person.?
Sean McKenna, the Housing Executive`s North Belfast District Manager, welcomed the initiative and said:
?The Housing Executive is committed to improving living conditions in the New Lodge Tower Blocks and the new recycling initiative will complement the many improvements already carried out by the Housing Executive at the flats, including the introduction of 24/7 concierge services in each block.?
