Customers have really got behind the scheme and have put Tesco on course to hit its self-imposed target of using a billion fewer carrier bags by next year.
Shoppers who re-use bags or alternatives such as shopping trollies or backpacks earn Green Clubcard points which can be used to get money off most goods at Tesco or to obtain discounts on a wide range of services and attractions.
Executive director Lucy Neville-Rolfe said:
?This fantastic milestone proves once again that the carrot is far more effective than the stick in encouraging a change to greener consumption.

Tesco is committed to reducing packaging, increasing recycling and cutting its carbon footprint.
A regional breakdown of where most bags have been saved suggests that customers in the West Midlands are the 'greenest' shoppers. Tesco stores in that region gave out 542,768 fewer bags on average since the scheme was launched. Second was the North East, with 514,283 fewer, and third was Scotland, which cut the average number of bags issued per store by 499,727.
The total bags saved by region was led by the South-East with a total saving of 183.3m bags. Second was the East with 78m fewer and third was the South West with 68m fewer bags.
