Northamptonshire County Council is calling out for volunteers willing to take part in a recycling challenge that might change the way they live their lives forever.

'What Not to Waste' is an initiative organised by the county council alongside district and borough councils that aims to transform Northamptonshire residents from wasters, to winners and show ordinary people that making their lives less rubbish is easier than they might think.

Families from across the county will be asked to step up to the challenge of reducing, reusing and recycling all their rubbish over a six-week period beginning in July. Volunteers will be given everything they need to transform their lifestyles, from a free compost bin to reusable shopping bags, as well as help and advice from a dedicated team of recycling advisers.

The campaign will challenge the participants to complete three simple tasks:

? To recycle everything they can through their local kerbside recycling scheme and household waste recycling centres

? To reduce the amount of rubbish they produce by being a Smart Shopper

? To reuse what they can and donate to reuse charities.

Householders whose bins are normally bulging are welcome to apply, wherever they live in the county, whether their family is large or small, whether they have older children, small children or no children at all. Families with very young children are particularly welcome to sign up and give real cotton nappies a try.

Councillor Ben Smith, cabinet member for environment said:

?This is a chance for householders in the county to find out more about recycling and reducing the amount of rubbish that they throw away.

?The volunteers selected to take part will be challenged to take just a few simple steps to make their lifestyles more environmentally friendly and slim their bins over a six-week period. Hopefully their efforts will demonstrate to everyone just how easy it is to make recycling part of their daily routine.?

Interested volunteers should telephone the council's waste management team on 01604 237440 or email Rebecca Cook on rdcook@northamptonshire.gov.uk to find out more. Callers will be asked a few informal questions to ascertain what kind of recycling behaviour they already have and will be given more information about what they will be expected to do.

The deadline to apply to take part is 4th July and selection will take place shortly after.
