Residents in Catford, South London, have been chosen to test run a new, three-quarter size domestic wheelie bin from Thursday, 21 June.

The 180-litre bin will replace the conventional 240-litre black wheelie bin. Residents will also receive a large 240-litre green wheelie bin for their recyclable waste if they do not already have one.

The trial, supported by WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), aims to encourage residents to recycle more. The pilot programme will involve 1,500 households and residents' participation in the scheme will be monitored by London Remade Solutions.

Councillor Susan Wise, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said:

?Lewisham has already received widespread recognition for its excellent environmental policies but we are always looking for new ways to raise public awareness and to translate this into tangible results.

?This pilot scheme aims to encourage residents to think about their waste before they throw it away. We hope the difference in size between the bins will act as a constant reminder that we need to think about recycling first and throwing away second.

?We will be keeping an eye on the project with great interest. Initial reactions have been favourable with some people saying the bins are easier to move and take up less space.?

Dee Moloney, Director of London Remade Solutions, said:

?By monitoring participation, we will be able to identify how many people are recycling to indicate the success of the scheme. Lewisham will be able to use this information to target communication materials and decide whether to roll the scheme out to other households in the borough.?

Lewisham's weekly collections of both recyclable and non-recyclable waste will remain unchanged.
