Rona Jungeblut, of North Hill, N6, signed up to the real nappies scheme for her baby daughter Rhea because of concerns about the environmental damage caused by disposable nappies.
As with all other participants in the scheme ? run by Haringey Council and funded by the North London Waste Authority ? she will now receive more than ?50 to put towards reusable cotton nappies over three months.
Rona said:
?I think the problem of rubbish production is the biggest one currently facing us and I didn't like the idea of contributing towards the problem.
?That's why I decided it would be better to use real nappies rather than disposables, and after using them for a while I actually found them better for the baby. Rhea probably likes them more than disposables because there's no elastic and I imagine she's more comfortable.
?I think a lot of people are put off because they think real nappies are inconvenient. But I've found them really practical and I would definitely recommend them to others.?
Rona Jungeblut with baby daughter RheaCurrently eight million nappies are thrown away each day in the UK, with most going to landfill. Most households who switch to real nappies find it almost halves their household waste.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Conservation, Cllr Brian Haley, said:
?It's no exaggeration to say that cutting the number of disposable nappies going to landfill is one of the biggest environmental challenges faced by this country.
?By signing up to the real nappies scheme, not only will you save money, you will also make an extremely positive contribution to the environment.
?Almost every parent who uses real nappies says they are easy to use, convenient and good for their baby, and I hope increasing numbers of residents will sign up to this scheme and try them out.?
Parents using real nappies can have them collected, sterilised and delivered for a small charge by Number One for Nappies.
