By visiting Locke Park, Keresforth Road, Barnsley on Tuesday, 5 June between 10am to 3pm, people will be able to take up to three bags of peat-free compost, made by recycling green waste from the council's parks and open spaces. Council staff will be available to help carry the compost to vehicles.
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet spokesperson for Environmental Services, said:
?We have ten tonnes of free garden compost to giveaway. By using our own materials to make the compost, we are helping save the amount of peat extracted from bogs, which is what most commercial composts use in some form. This in turn helps save the environment and the multitude of species that make peat bogs their natural habitat.?
Cllr Miller continued: ?I hope that when people see the quality of compost that can be made by recycling their own garden waste, it will encourage them to start making their own.
?We all know that compost helps improve the quality and drainage of your soil, but by going one step further and making your own, people are also making a small but significant contribution to helping the environment.?
