Cherwell District Council are investigating the possibility of collecting food waste along with garden waste in efforts to increase its recycling rate to over 50%.

Over the next couple of years, land-fill taxes are going to increase significantly, this is putting pressure on local authorities to either pass on these taxes, and in some cases, fines, to residents or to seek ways to reduce the amount of refuge that goes to land-fill.

Councillor Kieron Mallon, says, ?We know from best practice that food waste collections are possible, that they can be done effectively and offer Council Tax payers value for money. We've given our successful recycling team another challenge to come up with a pilot scheme and we very much look forward to getting something underway in Cherwell.?

Cherwell hope to be able to run this scheme within their current budget, with some help from grants, and expect the cost to be in the region of ?250k per year.

There are still some issues to arrange before they can begin their pilot, the main one is that they still do not have anyone who can take the waste and reprocess it, though they hope some facilities ?may become available in the Aylesbury area by March 2008.?

So, don't go putting your food waste into your recycling bin just yet. An alternative to putting your food waste into the bin is to put it into a wormery, those worm will just gobble it all up.
