Mr Brown has announced plans to persuade countries from across the EU to lower taxes on environmentally friendly products. A proposal will be put to the European Commission on behalf of both Britain and France.

Speaking during a press conference with President Sarkozy in France, Mr Brown said:

?We will work together, both our finance ministers proposing to the European Commission that it is now time - and it cannot wait much longer - that we give new incentives to people who are wanting to buy environmentally friendly products.

?Our proposal is that we have reduced rate taxation of VAT for environmentally friendly products, from fridges to insulation.?

The plans would involve reducing rates of VAT on energy-efficient products and energy-saving materials, as an incentive for consumers to make more sustainable decisions.
