As part of the Governments Energy Trends report, BERR have realeased 2007 renewables figures for the first time, showing an increase of 8.5 percent on 2006 for renewable electricity, but this still only represents 5% of all the UK's electricity generated from all sources.

Landfill gas, which has a significant share of renewable energy, rose by 6 percent in 2007.  Increases from biomass (where the Government expects rapid expansion in the coming years) were still only marginal.  There was a 23 percent fall in generation from the co-firing of biomass with fossil fuels.

Generation from onshore wind grew by 11 percent; and generation from offshore wind grew by 20 percent and as a result wind became the leading renewable technology in the UK in 2007 (in terms of electricity generated) overtaking hydro despite hydro generation being at a new record level in 2007.

On the basis to be used for measuring progress towards the EU renewables target for which it is proposed that the UK reaches 15 percent by 2020, the percentage in 2007 reached 1.8 percent up from 1.5 per cent in 2006.

The total electricity generation from all renewable sources in 2007 was 19,664 GWh.
