A biomass power plant is being planned for Sleaford, Lincolnshire.  It is expected to produce enough electricity for 65,000 homes and use straw and woodchip sourced within 50 miles of the plant.

Planning permission has been submitted to North Kesteven District Council, and public consultation will start today.

The plant is expected to produce up to 40 megawatts of electricity each year, which is enough to power 65,000 homes.  To produce this much electricity, the plant will need to burn about 240,000 tonnes of straw and some woodchip.  The company emphasises that the straw will be sourced within 50 miles of the plant, from existing surplus sources.

The company estimates that the plant would save 250,000 tonnes of CO2 per year being emitted.  Once constructed 80 jobs would be created to keep the plant running, and provide £6 million a year for straw contracts.
