In the next 30 to 50 years, renewable energy will play an increasingly important role in China's energy supply strategy, and it is expected to account for 30% or higher of China's total energy supply by 2050, said Shi Dinghuan, president of the Institute of renewable energy in China, at the opening ceremony of the International Solar Energy Society's Solar World Congress.

Wind energy will become increasingly important in China's energy supply strategy, particularly in electricity supply. Shi said that it is feasible to reach the electricity generation capability of 300 to 500 million kilowatts through wind power by 2050.

Shi pointed out that in next 20 to 30 years, China's small-size hydropower resources will be fully developed, with an estimated capacity of 100 million kilowatts of electricity, taking up 10% of China's total installed power capacity.

Solar power will experience a round of large-scale development after 2020. It is predicted that solar power will generate 200 to 300 million kilowatts of electricity in 2050, accounting for about 10% of China's installed power capacity at that time.

Bio-energy, such as methane, will also take an important position in China's energy supply in the future.

Gradually, renewable energy will make greater contributions to guarantee the energy safety and the reduction of greenhouse gas emission in China.
