Newcastle under Lyme Borough Council has switched on to 'green' electricity in a move to help halt climate change and save money at the same time.

Energy company e-on has made an award to the authority in recognition of its efforts to achieve energy efficiency.

The Council is committed to using electricity from renewable sources at the Civic Offices, Newcastle, and the depot in Knutton Lane, an initiative that will save £3,500.

The cost of using electricity from non-renewable sources, such as coal-fired or gas-fired power stations, at the two buildings from summer 06 to summer 07 was £86,500.

The cost of the green electricity from now until summer 08 will be £83,000.

"We are delighted to be achieving savings in this way – using power from renewable sources also fits in with the Council's priority of creating a cleaner, greener, safer Borough," said Cllr. Stephen Holland, Cabinet member responsible for finance, resources and efficiency.

The electricity that e-on provides for the authority is generated from sources including wind, sunlight, watermills, wood and crops.

Using power from 100% renewable sources will help to achieve a worldwide reduction in the greenhouse gases that are so harmful to the environment.

"By harnessing these natural resources we are taking a significant step forward in reducing our carbon footprint," said Council Leader Simon Tagg.

"We are planning to extend the initiative so that we can benefit in future years."
