A Howe Dell School in Hatfield has opened stuffed with lots of environmental features including wind turbines and solar panels.

The school building, now named "The Runway", was built on the site of an old British Aerospace site and replaces its old building which will be sold on.  The environment has been thought about at every stage of development and even includes an open air classroom on the sedum roof, from which the children can learn about solar panels and wind turbines.

The building is clad in oak panels and has bamboo flooring in the canteen, it even uses recycled yoghurt pots for its sinks.

Speaking to the Welwyn and Hatfield Times, the headteacher Debra Massey said:
"The children have absolutely loved it and settled in really well. They have all been really excited and loved the new playground and their new classrooms.

"We managed to open on time and a big thank you goes to all the staff and parents whose contributions made it possible."

Though the school has opened there are still one or two jobs to do around the school before it is completely finished, including installing the wind turbine.
