The new lighting also reduces the carbon dioxide emissions by over 37 tonnes per year. Carbon dioxide emissions are one of the main contributors to climate change and one tonne of carbon dioxide would fill a balloon 10m in diameter, that's about the size of the balloon in Bournemouth gardens or is equivalent to the emissions produced by driving a family car 120,000 miles or driving around the world 5 times.

This new lighting has increased the light levels in the main hall and has already received some positive comments from the customers at the Littledown Centre.

The technical team at the Littledown Centre are also planning to convert the lighting in other areas within the Littledown Centre including the crèche and the fitness studios later in the summer.

Peter Brown, Group Facilities Manager for the Littledown Centre is encouraged by this energy efficient lighting, he said:
"We are taking positive steps to ensure that we are as energy efficient as possible. This main hall lighting investment will result in a significant saving both in our energy consumption and in reducing our carbon emissions. We are also exploring other ways to reduce costs and carbon emissions, and will be implementing more energy efficiency schemes later in the summer including reducing the amount of energy required to power the swimming pool water circulation pumps."

The scheme was funded using the Bournemouth Borough Council's energy loan scheme in partnership with the Carbon Trust.
