The survey of 442 voluntary organisations found that 89% would like to make their office 'greener', but 84% said the cost of making changes was holding them back. More than half (61%) also said that a lack of knowledge was also reducing their ability to improve their eco-standards.
Many organisations already admitted to taking small steps; 74% said they already ensured all computers and lights were switched off when they left the building, but 42% stated that environmental improvements were not a high organisational priority (the priorities being the work of the charity and staying afloat).
The web-based 'green office' questionnaire's main aim was to measure the current level of 'green' activity that is going on within the sector, particularly focusing on the office environment and travel to and from work. It also attempted to gauge the level of environmental understanding and concern with the sector, and to learn more about the perceived barriers to improving behaviours and 'greening' offices.
The feedback and results will be used to publish a Green Office Guide to help support charities and voluntary organisations in their attempts to make their offices eco-friendly.
The questionnaire results can be found on the Every Action Counts website.
