The Enviro-Vision Song Quest showcase took place before a packed and lively audience at the Muni Arts Centre, Pontypridd and included bands from six comprehensive schools from within Rhondda Cynon Taf.
Each of the bands, which were made up of between six and 13 musicians each, performed a song which had its very own 'green theme', including recycling, dog fouling, flytipping and graffiti.
The comprehensive schools taking part in the project had individual topics to sing about. Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari's ?Ailgylchwch Nawr? concentrated on recycling, Mountain Ash Comprehensive sang about litter in ?Pick It Up? while Tonyrefail Comprehensive School pupils performed ?Apocalypto Climate Change? which was about sustainability.
Hawthorn High School's ?Bags, Bottles, Cans and Tins? was about recycling, Coedylan sang about graffiti in their song ?Graffito? while Blaengwawr performed ?Methane Digester? which was about dog fouling.
In total around 70 youngsters were involved in the project which saw them attend workshops to write lyrics, compose music and actually record their individual songs over a two-day period. With the help of music tutors from the Council, the aim of the project was to raise awareness of environmental issues.
The recordings of the six songs were then made into a special CD which was also sold at the event and each of the entrants received a certificate as a token of appreciation for supporting this very important initiative.
The evening marked the first joint-project between the Council's Streetcare Services Team in partnership with Sonig Youth Music Industry from the Council's Cultural Services.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Frontline Service Cllr Anthony Christopher said:
?This was a magnificent night indeed. The youngsters involved displayed a wealth of talent on stage and it was a pleasure to have attended such a memorable occasion.
?I'm delighted that the Council took the initiative to organise such a prestigious event because not only did It allow our local schoolchildren the opportunity to perform before a live audience in one of our cultural venues but also helped to send out the message about the importance of recycling and improving our surrounding environment.
?I applaud everyone for organising the showcase and congratulate everyone involved in what I'm sure is the first in a series of successful events.?
