In the online poll, conducted during June with 8,182 US residents, 63.1% of respondents said that the United States uses too much energy, with more of the younger generation agreeing with this sentiment than the older, who mostly felt that they were using the ?right amount of energy?.
Asked whether the government should act to reduce energy use, even if it means lifestyle changes, opinion is split between two extremes, with 29.5% strongly agreeing and 25.8% strongly disagreeing (27.5% ?somewhat? agreeing).
As for personal energy saving activities, 85.7% said that they turned off lights when leaving the room, and 59.9% were switching to energy saving lights. Both figures down on a similar poll taken in January.
On global climate change, 60.5% of the respondents indicated that they were moderately to highly concerned, and 62% felt that the United States should cooperate with international organisations such as the United Nations and the European Union, but 47.7% ?felt signing the [Kyoto] treaty would put the US economy at a disadvantage to China and India.?
