The National Statistics Office today published energy consumption figures for commercial and public sector usage.

Energy consumption, including electricity, by UK companies and the public sector increased by 10.6 per cent between 1990 and 2005.

In the same period output (Gross Domestic Product) rose by 43.4 per cent in real terms. This resulted in a decrease in energy intensity (energy consumed per unit of output) of 22.9 per cent.

Use of energy from carbon fuels by UK companies and the public sector has increased from 148.9 million tonnes of oil equivalent (mtoes) in 1990 to 165.7 mtoes in 2005. This is a rise of 11.3 per cent.

As a percentage of total energy consumption of primary fuels and equivalents, total non-domestic energy from carbon fuels has increased very marginally from 67.5 per cent in 1990 to 67.7 per cent in 2005.

In 2005, the amount of energy used by the whole economy which derived directly from carbon fuels at 225.0 mtoes was broadly unchanged compared with the 225.6 mtoes recorded the previous year. Total energy use in 2005 amounted to 244.8 mtoes of which 19.8 mtoes (8.1 per cent) came from non-carbon sources such as nuclear power, hydroelectricity and imports of electricity.

Energy consumption is highest in the energy, gas and water industries, which in 2005 accounted for 27.0 per cent of all energy derived from carbon fuels. The manufacturing & transport, and communication industries accounted for a further 16.9 per cent and 15.7 per cent respectively of energy derived from carbon fuels.

In 2005, the household sector accounted for 34.1 per cent of energy use (once electricity transformation and distribution losses are allocated to the final consumer).
