London Aware Straw Poll

Last weekend was the first UK Aware event held in London's Barbican Centre. It seemed the ideal opportunity to find out what people thought were the important green issues, so we did a survey of all the stall-holders.
We put a simple question to everyone: "If you were Prime Minister, what would be at the top of your eco-list of things to do?" Here are the responses we got:
Transportation
- Ban all cars from central London
- Include planes and shipping in official carbon emissions figures
- Really invest in public transport infrastructure
- Do away with road tax! Replace it with increased taxes on fuel.
- Promote viable and sustainable fuels
- Make the London Underground free
- Stop the development of the 3rd runway at Heathrow
Food
- Implement a meat quota system
- Admit that meat & dairy is damaging the environment
- Locally source food
Government
- Tackle government wastage
- Take the long term view for investment
- Liberate government processes (e.g. planning permission for eco-projects)
Recycling
- Ban non-recyclable plastic
- Only allow recyclable packaging in supermarkets
Investment
- Remove VAT on green products
- Take the long term view for investment
- Really invest in public transport infrastructure
Misc
- Ensure new homes are zero-carbon
- Enforce lights out for supermarkets and office buildings
- Ban the standby button
The results are quite varied, which reflects the variety of the organisations at London Aware. We would love to hear what you have to say about these eco-priorities, indeed what would be at the top of your eco-list as Prime Minister? Send us your thoughts using the comment box, below.
