In 2007, electricity consumed by data centres in the EU was estimated to be 56 TWh per year, and is projected to increase to 104 TWh per year by 2020. The projected energy consumption rise poses a problem for EU energy and environmental policies.

The Government today held Europe's first carbon allowance auction in Phase II (2008 - 2012) of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. Four million allowances were sold at a total value of £54m, or £13.60 per allowance.
